El Poblenou Cemetery in Barcelona, Spain is unique to all the cemeteries. Aside from its vast open spaces full of solemn grave walls, the cemetery is home to dozens of great works of arts. One remarkable art work worth seeing is the intriguing Kiss of Death (El Petó de la Mort in Catalan and El beso de la muerte in Spanish) sculpture.
The unusual sculpture depicts death (in the form of a winged skeleton) plants a mortal kiss on the forehead of a handsome young man dates back to 1930. The story behind this bizarre Kiss of death sculpture is that; Llaudet family mourn the death of a son and wanted to make a sculpture for his tomb; and the epitaph bears Cinto Verdaguer famous verses:
“And his young heart can not help;
in his veins the blood stops and freezes
and encouragement lost faith embraces
fall feeling the kiss of death”
Jaume Barba has been credited for the creation of the Kiss of Death sculpture; however, other s claimed it was Joan Fontbernat who conceived the work.
